Practical Activity: Cleaning of Water Bodies Title Cleaning and Conservation of a Local Water Body Aim To clean a nearby water body, remove visible waste and create awareness about the importance of keeping water resources clean and pollution-free. Objectives - To understand the causes of water-body pollution. - To remove plastic, paper, cloth and other floating or visible waste. - To promote responsible waste disposal among the community. - To understand the importance of protecting ponds, lakes and other water resources. - To encourage students to become environmental ambassadors. Materials Required Gloves, masks, waste collection bags, tongs/sticks, buckets, brooms, protective footwear, separate containers for waste segregation, drinking water and first-aid kit. Procedure 1. Select a safe and accessible pond, lake, tank or other local water body. 2. Conduct a preliminary survey and identify the major types and sources of waste. 3. Explain safety precautions to all participants before beginning the activity. 4. Wear gloves, masks and suitable protective footwear. 5. Remove only visible and safely accessible waste from the surrounding area and water edge using appropriate tools. 6. Do not enter deep water, sewage-contaminated areas or unstable/slippery locations. 7. Segregate the collected waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories. 8. Keep recyclable materials separately and hand them over to an authorised waste collector. 9. Dispose of the remaining waste through the local sanitation/municipal system. 10. Record the quantity and types of waste collected. 11. Conduct an awareness activity for local residents on preventing dumping and plastic pollution. 12. Take before-and-after photographs for documentation and future monitoring. Observation During the activity, observe: - Type and quantity of waste found. - Presence of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials. - Sources of pollution around the water body. - Condition of the surrounding area. - Participation and response of the local community. Result The selected area around the water body was cleaned and the collected waste was properly segregated and disposed of. The activity created awareness among students and the local community about preventing pollution and conserving water resources. Precautions - Students should not enter the water body. - Do not handle broken glass, sharp objects, medical waste, chemicals or unknown substances directly. - Avoid contact with sewage or contaminated water. - Use gloves, masks and appropriate protective equipment. - Keep children away from deep water and slippery banks. - Seek assistance from local authorities for hazardous or large-scale waste. - Cleaning should be followed by regular monitoring so that waste does not accumulate again. Conclusion Cleaning a water body is not only a cleanliness activity but also an important step towards water conservation and ecosystem protection. Regular community participation, responsible waste disposal and prevention of pollution can help keep our ponds, lakes and tanks healthy for people, plants and animals. “Clean Water Bodies – Healthy Communities – Sustainable Future.”Gousia TGNGC JANGAON TELANGANA
