Waste to Wealth: Composting for a Sustainable Kitchen Garden As part of our commitment to environmental protection and sustainable practices, our school has initiated a simple yet meaningful composting programme. The main objective of this activity is to reduce organic waste, recycle biodegradable materials and produce natural manure for our school kitchen garden. Every day, vegetable peels, leftover vegetable pieces, fruit waste and other biodegradable materials are generated in and around the school. Instead of throwing these materials into waste bins, we collect the suitable organic waste separately and use it for compost preparation. Through natural decomposition, these waste materials are converted into nutrient-rich organic compost. The prepared compost is then used as a natural manure in our school kitchen garden. It improves soil fertility, supports healthy plant growth and reduces our dependence on chemical fertilizers. The kitchen garden provides an excellent practical learning space where students can understand concepts such as decomposition, nutrient cycling, soil fertility, organic farming and sustainable agriculture. This activity also helps students develop responsible waste-management habits. They learn that waste is not always useless; many materials can be reused, recycled or converted into useful resources. By separating biodegradable waste and converting it into compost, we are reducing the amount of waste sent to dumping areas and helping to keep our surroundings clean. Our composting and kitchen-garden activities promote the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. They also encourage students to adopt eco-friendly practices in their homes and communities. The programme demonstrates that even a small initiative at school can contribute to environmental conservation when it becomes a regular habit. Through this initiative, our school is transforming kitchen waste into valuable organic manure and waste into wealth.
