While reading about the impact of potholes on environment i was surprised to know that a pothole of around one meter and 10cm depth with a traffic load of 10000 vehicles per day produce hundreds of tonnes of co2 every year. You wonder why? Look , the study says that whenever a vehicle is crossing a pothole it force the vehicle to slow down for 5 sec which increases fuel consumption by 10ml . When multiplied by thusands of vehicle daily fo one year 36500 litres of fuel whose consumption emit almost 80,000 tonnes of co2. Moreover a vehicle when slow down or stops a vacuum is created backwards which brings dust with it which contains pm2.5 and pm10 particles. Pm2.5 and 10 particles are far more hazardous than co2. Apart from that when a tyre falls in pothole with the thud , wear and rear of tyres happen along with other losses. In this way a simple pothole is very nuisance and we must do every possible thing to make that fill. When a simple pothole of one meter is producing thousands of tonnes of co2 then can anyone imagine a road full of dust might be worsening AQI equivalent to a full large scale industry.
